Our Commitment To Privacy
The American Cancer Society (hereinafter “ACS”) respects the privacy of every individual who visits http://cme.amcancersoc.org (hereinafter the “CME site”). Because your privacy is important to us, we provide you with notice about the collection and use of your information. By visiting the ACS CME site, you accept the practices described in this privacy notice.
Data Collection
We collect two types of information:
(1) Standard web server traffic pattern information. General traffic, site usage, and length of stay information is collected and stored in log files. This type of information may be shared externally only on an aggregated basis.
(2) Personal information. We do not collect personally identifiable information from you unless you provide it to us voluntarily and knowingly. In order to provide you with credit for completing the online medical education course, we have to collect the following information: first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number, area of practice, and email address. This information is collected on our online registration form.
If you choose to participate in other activities that are linked to this particular site, any information you provide will be protected in accordance with our general Online Privacy Policy. This includes book orders and requests for information.
Data Use
We limit the use of information provided to us on the CME site to the following:
Internal Use
(1) We will only use aggregate information derived, in part, from your use of our site to improve our site and our service to you.
(2) We will maintain records of the data you provide during registration in order to document the accumulation of your CME credits. This information will not leave the CME department and will not, therefore, be available to other areas of the organization. We will not use this information to contact you unless you request otherwise (see Your Options below).
External Use
Users completing CME credits can expect to receive a certificate displaying their name, educational activity completed, and date completed. After you successfully complete an online quiz, you may elect to print a certificate certifying completion of the CME activity. Users that fax in their correct answers will be mailed a certificate from ACS.
Accreditation agencies only receive aggregate information from ACS.
We hire Stanford University Libraries' HighWire Press to help run the CME website. We prohibit High Wire Press from using your information for any other purpose.
We will disclose your personal information, without notice, if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to: (a) comply with the law (b) protect and defend the rights or property of ACS and its family of Web sites, and, (c) act in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of users of ACS, its Web sites, or the public.
Your Options
You may “opt-in” from the web site to receive ACS CME updates (including the availability of new education products and services) by selecting that option on the evaluation form offered after each CME quiz. If you wish to discontinue receiving updates, you may send an “opt-out” request via email to cme{at}cancer.org.
Access
Upon request, we will provide you with a description of the information that we maintain about you. The description will be sent via postal mail which we believe is the most secure method of communication. Further, we will respond to requests for updates or changes to your personal information. Please send your requests by email to cme{at}cancer.org or in writing to:

CME data is stored in password-controlled servers in ACS offices in Atlanta, Georgia and in Stanford University Libraries' HighWire Press offices in Palo Alto, California. Our staff and volunteers are educated about the importance of safeguarding your information and we are committed to holding them accountable for the protection of your confidentiality.
