OBJECTIVES After reading the article, TNM Staging of Cancers of the Head and Neck: Striving for Uniformity among Diversity, the learner should be able to:
Understand the importance, as well as the limitations, of using the TNM system to stage head and neck cancers.
Identify the changes incorporated in the 6th edition of the TNM staging system, and understand the reasons for these changes.
Recognize the investigational methods needed to assess the stage of different types of head and neck cancers, as well as the importance of documenting the findings in detail.
Discuss some of the potential future modifications to the staging system, including the possible addition of non-anatomic parameters.
The ACS designates this educational activity for a maximum of one category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.
