OBJECTIVES After reading the article, TNM Staging of Cancers of the Head and Neck: Striving for Uniformity among Diversity, the learner should be able to:

•  Understand the importance, as well as the limitations, of using the TNM system to stage head and neck cancers.

•  Identify the changes incorporated in the 6th edition of the TNM staging system, and understand the reasons for these changes.

•  Recognize the investigational methods needed to assess the stage of different types of head and neck cancers, as well as the importance of documenting the findings in detail.

•  Discuss some of the potential future modifications to the staging system, including the possible addition of non-anatomic parameters.

The ACS designates this educational activity for a maximum of one category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.
