OBJECTIVES After reading the article, The Staging of Colorectal Cancer: 2004 and Beyond, the learner should be able to:

•  Describe the TNM staging system for colorectal cancer, and understand the rationale behind the various staging categories.

•  Realize that the TNM staging system for colorectal cancer is constantly undergoing critical evaluation to incorporate new staging strategies and ensure it remains relevant.

•  Understand why it is important to stage colorectal cancer patients utilizing the TNM system.

•  The American Cancer Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of one-half category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he or she actually spent in the activity.
