OBJECTIVES After reading the article, An Evidence-based Staging System for Cutaneous Melanoma, the learner should be able to:
• Describe the changes to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system for cutaneous melanoma and understand the rationale behind these changes.
• Understand the importance of the differences between clinical and pathologic staging of the disease.
• Stage cutaneous melanoma based on the new system, using available information from clinical, pathologic, radiologic, and laboratory studies.
• Understand the importance of utilizing the prognostic factors identified during the development of the staging system, both in treating individual patients and in the design of future clinical trials.
The American Cancer Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of one category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he or she actually spent in the activity.
