OBJECTIVES After reading the article, Alternative Cancer Cures: "Unproven" or "Disproven"?, the learner should be able to:
• Distinguish "alternative" from "complementary" therapies for cancer.
• Describe some of the more common therapies touted as alternative cancer cures and the purported rationale for their use.
• Understand that clinical trials have been conducted on some, though by no means all, alternative cancer therapies.
• Discuss the results of the clinical trials that have been conducted on these therapies.
The American Cancer Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of one-half category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he or she actually spent in the activity.
