OBJECTIVES After reading the article, American Cancer Society Guidelines for the Early Detection of Cancer, the learner should be able to:
• Understand the scientific basis of the ACS guidelines for early detection of cancer and be aware of current controversies and research in progress.
• Identify patients at average, increased, and high risk of various cancers and provide guidance about appropriate early detection tests, their benefits, limitations, and side effects.
• Understand the clinical and public health implications of surveillance data on the proportion of people who undergo various early detection tests and examinations.
