OBJECTIVES After reading the article, Tobacco Control for Clinicians Who Treat Adolescents, the learner should be able to:

•   Understand the reasons why children begin using tobacco and how they become addicted to tobacco.

•   Identify children who may be at increased risk of becoming addicted to tobacco.

•   Describe effective public health approaches to curtailing youth tobacco use.

•   Understand the physician's role in directly helping adolescents quit tobacco use, and in preventing them from starting in the first place.

The American Cancer Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of one hour of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he or she actually spent in the activity.
